Archival Series

Secret Chiefs 3: Xaphan: Book of Angels Volume 9 [#7364]
Spectacular arrangements of Masada compositions by mad alchemist Trey Spruance, mastermind of Secret Chiefs 3 and one of the most brilliant musicians around. Drawing upon an astonishing array of musical styles from Exotica and Surf to Ethiopian Funk and Gypsy Swing, Trey ’s colorful orchestral arrangements perfectly compliment the lyricism and dynamic rhythmic complexity of Zorn ’s evocative Book of Angels. Featuring some of the best musicians from the Bay Area, LA and Seattle scenes, this is one of the most compelling installments in the entire Masada series.

John Zorn: Filmworks XIX: Dimitri Geller's The Rain Horse [#7365]
Another volume of FilmWorks is always a cause for celebration—Zorn’s freewheeling soundtrack music is among the most listener-friendly in his entire catalog. This installment presents a charming and lyrical score created for renowned Russian animator Dimitri Geller’s delightful animated parable The Rain Horse. Beautifully performed by the dynamic trio of Erik Friedlander, Rob Burger and Greg Cohen, these eleven cues are some of Zorn’s most appealing music for film. Passionate and poignant chamber music for another masterpiece by one of the world’s great animators .

Composer Series

Eyvind Kang: The Yelm Sessions [#8042]
Another important piece of the elusive and hermetic Eyvind Kang puzzle. This newest studio project from one of the most consistently interesting young composer/performers working today is instantly Kang’s most adventurous, varied and ambitious recordings to date. Featuring many of his most illustrious musical associates as well as several orchestral ensembles from around the world, this new CD brings Kang’s exuberant gift for orchestration and lyricism together with a keen sense of the miraculous. Kang’s star is rightfully on the rise.

Jose Maceda: Drone and Melody [#8043]
This is the second Tzadik release of music by one of the most original and under-appreciated composers of the twentieth century. With his passing in 2004, several of his most passionate musical collaborators have been continuing Maceda’s legacy and they come together here to present his most ambitious and greatest large scale work—Strata. Beautifully recorded In Manila at the University of the Philippines directed by Maceda’s long-time collaborator Ramôn Santos and Mills College colleague Chris Brown, this is a long awaited follow-up to the seminal Gongs and Bamboo release from 2001. Also included are two beautifully recorded pieces for western instruments from Maceda’s last decade—Sujeichonfor five pianos based largely on Korean court music, and Music for Two Pianos and Four Percussion Groups. Another essential release by this maverick compositional master.

Richard Crandell: Spring Steel [#8041]
Another remarkable recording by the quirky Oregon composer/performer Richard Crandell, whose first delightful CD for Tzadik Mbira Magic hit several Best Ten lists for 2004. Adapting and retuning traditional Shona instruments, Crandell draws upon the work of Steve Reich, Terry Riley and John Fahey to create a hypnotic minimalist world through the use of repetition, variation and phasing. Charming and original, this is beautiful and subtle music from a recently rediscovered maverick composer out of the early days of west coast minimalism.

Chris Dench: Beyond Status Geometry [#8044]
Born in the UK, and now a resident of Melbourne, composer Chris Dench is a member of the new complexity movement along with Brian Ferneyhough, James Dillon and Richard Barrett. His music, rich with challenges and detail, is sorely under-recorded and Tzadik is proud to present four of his most extreme and passionate compositions in startling performances by some of the best musicians in the Australian New Music scene. Highlighting this disc is his infamous percussion quartet from 1995, beyond status geometry, which was labeled “unplayable” until this startling and virtuosic performance. A powerful disc of new music from Australia’s most accomplished modernist.

Fred Frith: Back to Life [#8045]
A new CD of classical chamber music by a contemporary master who has been redefining new music since 1972 with cutting edge bands like Henry Cow, Keep the Dog, Skeleton Crew, Massacre and Cosa Brava. Featuring the virtuoso cellist Joan Jeanrenaud (formerly of the Kronos Quartet), percussion madman William Winant (who has worked with everyone from Lou Harrison, Steve Reich and John Cage to Mr Bungle and Sonic Youth), pianist/conductor Stephen Drury with his remarkable Boston ensemble the Callithumpian Consort, and the Belgian virtuoso Daan Vandewalle, Back to Life presents a sparkling program of five major chamber works by this imaginative and courageous border crosser.

Radical Jewish Culture

David Buchbinder: Odessa/Havana [#8121]
Trumpeter, composer, long-time leader of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and founder of the famed Ashkenaz festival of New Yiddish Culture teams with award winning pianist/composer Hilario Duran to explore the exciting nexus of Cuban/Klezmer fusion. Inspired by the Jewish mambo craze of the 1950’s, the music here moves from Bulgar to Bembé, Sher to Son Montuno, Hora to Habanero. A brilliant blend of two cultures, this is an exciting release by a band that will appeal to fans of latin, jazz and Jewish music alike.

Steven Bernstein: Diaspora Suite [#8122]
With groups like Sex Mob, Millennial Territory Orchestra and Diaspora Soul, Steven Bernstein is energizing the downtown scene with a passionate and indefatigable creativity. His brilliance continues with Diaspora Suite, the fourth installment in his Diaspora series for Tzadik and perhaps the best! Twelve original compositions exploring the Jewish tradition are brilliantly performed by a nonet of California musicians including Ben Goldberg, Peter Apfelbaum and several key players from his legendary band the Hieroglyphics. Channeling Miles Davis, Gil Evans and the Sephardic traditions of Darkness and Light, this is fabulous new Jewish music by one of the most talented and charismatic figures in the downtown scene.

What the fine folks at Aquarius Records had to say about the layout for the Heavy Winged release on Archive:

"Another gorgeously and extravagantly packaged release from aRCHIVE, this one comes in a six panel gatefold, decorated with angular designs in shades of black and brown and white, but that six panel gatefold is housed in another 6 panel gatefold, that one printed on vellum, so the various designs mesh into something completely new, the cd affixed to a nub on the middle panel of the inside gatefold."

I'll even forgive them for posting the back of the cd as its cover.

ARTVOICE v6n35 08.31.07
"Exploring recent trends toward glacial, long-form improvisations, Teeth So Sharp marries heavy guitar rock and art sound sensibilities. Comprising members of Buffalo’s Novelist and Brookyln’s Asten, Teeth So Sharp is an all guitar trio that harnesses feedback and drone to create sustained beds of ambient noise. Joining them on stage at Soundlab this Saturday (Sept. 1) is Cages (Nola Ann, providing hymnal vocal gymnastics and field recordings, and David Bailey on guitar and electronics), with special guest Steve Backzkowski. Although initially fashioning what felt like fractured nursery rhymes exploding with haunted, over the top vocals, Cages is maturing into a magnificently abstract ambient unit in full command of its own sound. The addition of Baczkowski, whose furious baritone sax playing and found sound manipulation promises to broaden the group even further, renders this unsual collaboration an intriguing experiment in atmospheric chaos. Show starts at 9pm." -ARTVOICE v6n35
